Samuel Murphy

Co-Leader and Drummer of the Higher Level Band

Samuel Murphy is often described as dependable, hardworking, and committed—traits that have shaped both his personal and professional life. Guided by the belief that “Every moment is a fresh beginning,” Samuel approaches each opportunity with a renewed sense of purpose and determination. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to a variety of musical projects, including Bangaley Blue Print by Fred Ferguson, Ring Play Puzzle, and Get Involved Remix by KB & Friends. Born on February 4, 1982, in Nassau, Bahamas, Samuel is the son of Dorothy Murphy and George McKenzie. These values of consistency, dedication, and resilience continue to influence his work, both as a musician and as a mentor in his community.

Growing up in the Bahamas, some of Samuel Murphy's fondest memories were of the long summer days spent at his grandmother's house. He and his brother, often left to their own devices, found solace and entertainment in making noise. With a natural sense of rhythm, they would improvise their own "jam sessions" using whatever they could find—pots, pans, and buckets—to create music. Church played a significant role in his upbringing, with his mother actively involved in the community. Attending and participating in church services became a way of life for Samuel, and the music of the church became ingrained in him from a young age.

Like many musicians, Samuel's career began in the church. He started as a local church drummer, a path familiar to many musicians who find their roots in faith-based music. His big break came when a close friend who played in a local band reached out with an opportunity to join a secular band on the island. While Samuel was initially uncertain due to his lack of experience in the secular music scene, he accepted the offer, dove into rehearsals, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Today, Samuel is an integral member of Ira Storr & The Spank Band, but his career spans several groups and artists. He has performed with notable local bands such as Xtra Band, The Gospel Flames, and Higher Level Band. Samuel has also had the privilege of playing on international stages with the famous Baha Men. His extensive work includes collaborations with numerous artists, both secular and gospel, and he has contributed his drumming talents to a wide array of musical projects.

Samuel is deeply committed to giving back to his community, a value instilled in him during his youth. As a member of Ira Storr & The Spank Band, he participates in charity events throughout the year, supporting causes that matter most. Additionally, as Vice President of The Bahamas Drummers Association (BDA), Samuel plays a pivotal role in supporting and nurturing the next generation of musicians. Through hosting drum clinics and workshops, the BDA works tirelessly to offer aspiring drummers valuable opportunities for growth and development.

Samuel’s advice to younger drummers is simple: "What you put in, is what you will get out." Passion and dedication are essential to success. If you're passionate about music, commit yourself to the craft, and the rewards will follow.

For Samuel, music is more than just a career—it's a way to express emotions. His love for music has always been a driving force, and it continues to be a natural and fulfilling part of his life. He believes that whatever captures your interest is where your path will ultimately lead, and for him, that path is music.

Samuel Murphy’s story is one of dedication, passion, and a lifelong commitment to the music that has shaped his life. From his childhood days of drumming on household items to his present-day role as a sought-after performer and mentor, Samuel’s journey is a testament to the power of music and the importance of giving back to the community.
